CHERRY TREE

This is what is known as an Evans cherry. It is not particularly sweet, in fact it is quite sour. There are great for pies and drying but to just eat them as they are , you must enjoy SOUR items.,

We bought this tree five years ago and it was only eight inches high. In that time, it has grown to be eight feet high and extremely bushy.
We got our first crop of cherries last year. This year , it looks like we will have an even better crop.It is so loaded that the branches are bent over touching the ground. We have to tie them up so they won't snap off. We should probably get six to eight ice cream buckets full.

The tree is very hardy as it was developed here in Alberta and is made for our climate. It survives the cold extremely well and grows like crazy. Maybe I'll pick some tomorrow before the Cedar Waxwings come and strip the tree.

Talk to you later

Cherry pie sounds delicious.

Have you tried drying them? They would be like little sour raisins but probably tasty especially mixed in with peanuts and things - trail mix.

We have a cherry tree in our backyard, a pie-type that is quite sour also, and we let the birds get the fruit as it is so tall I cannot reach anything. My parents also had a cherry orchard on Flathead Lake in Montana which grew about 6 different types. I remember Lamberts, Royal Anne, Bing. The sweetest ones were always the ones over the septic tank.

Bonita:I have to get a step ladder to get the top cherries. Isn't it strange where the sweetest cherries grow?

This is Mrs. Moose. While Mr Moose is waxing poetically about his cherry tree, Moose son #1 is nursing a pulled ligament from putting grandson Moose on the ground and Moose son #2 is recuperating from dental surgery ( wisdom teeth - ouch !!!)I have been out picking those #$%@** cherries ! :D, spending 3 hours picking about 30 pounds, pitting them and filling up 5 trays in the dehydrator. The house is beginning to smell heavenly-- not that Mr. Moose can smell because of his cold !! All this work to send the dehydrated cherries to Grandma Moose who loves sour things. hence her love for me !!

I want some pie. We have apples, three varieties - one big yellow kind good for eating, one little red kind perfect for canning, and one with green-apple-green skin and a rosy red blush that rock for for pies - which we've been negligent with collecting the early jumpers this year, so there are piles of them on the ground. They've been there for a while; the kids have stepped on them and they are partly dehydrated. It's like playing on a field of fruit leather.

I figure it this way: we're renovating the inside of the house this year. Next year we'll deal with the trees and the garden...
